Haistyle 1; The roll

This hairstyle was very common in the 1930's and 1940's.
With some practice it was very easy to do, today I can do it within 5 minutes.
Today I dont even use the 'hairrat' anymore as I can do without.
If you want to use a 'hairrat' or 'hair saucage', you could buy one at some stores but you can also make your own.
I made mine from my own hair that I cut of years ago, you could also make one from collected hairs from your brush...
Another option is using a old sweater where you cut a piece from and roll it up.
Here follows a Step-by-step guide of my very first experiments with this hairstyle.

Step 1

My hair!
I always found it a bit too long and too thick to make the average retro hairdue with and I was right.
Most women had shorter, shoulderlength hair cut in a arch wich makes the styles of the era much easier.
I might cut it soon.
But with the long hair Ive got Ive now found that it isnt impossible afterall.

Step 2

As you see I put the 'hair sausace' or 'rat' in the back of my neck, actually a bit better is to hold it lower, almost near the end of your hair, a friend could help you here.

Step 3

Ive now put all the hair below the sausage around it.
Grab it and tuck it between the sausage and your head, use pins to keep it there.

Step 4

Now pin the sides of the roll to your head, if you use a long hairroll you can use the hairroll to guide and hold the sides.

Step 5

Sideview, it is a bit of a mess, I used too many pins (you shouldn't see them) and its irregular.
But this is acceptable for a first try.
Today it usually looks much better.

Step 6

The front view...looking very tired...
Here you see where I didnt get much further, I didn't know what to do with the front hairwise...
Today I would put some huge curls there.

Step 7

Thankfully a hat covers up the mess at the front.
Down the back people will see the lovely hairroll.
In most occasions women could keep their hat on but if I would go to a place where they would expect me to take my hat off I would first have to spend some time in the ladiesroom making something nice out of it.
