Shoes and Socks

Even such a basic thing as shoes and socks were different just one generation ago.
Because elestics weren't used as much and their quality wasn't as good as today you will see that socks wouldn't fit as well.
Shoes were also rather different, although they do remind us of the rather common gentleman's shoe we still see today.

Shoes

Men's Shoes hadn't changed much since the beginning of the 20th century.
They were usually made of leather, coloured brown or black.
Although many different styles have been added today you will see that the 1940's shoe still looks a lot like the basic gentleman's shoe you can buy today.
Although Rubber soles were invented long ago, they still weren't extremely common.
Most shoes had leather soles but ofcourse when the war started soon these became very hard to get.

These shoes are rather interesting, as early as 1940 (The occupation of Holland had only just begun!) a magazine shows us these shoes as a way of saving on leather soles.
Simple, thick strips of wood have been glued to the sole of the shoe.

Another pair of warshoes, this time you can clearly see that nails have been used to attach the wooden strips to the sole.
